What Is a Good Turnitin Similarity Percentage?

Students ask for a magic number. Turnitin deliberately does not publish one, because a 30% score made entirely of correctly cited quotations is fine, and a 6% score that hides one uncited paragraph is not.

Typical ranges by work type

These are common institutional expectations, not rules — always check your own handbook.

  • Essays and coursework: under 15%
  • Dissertations and theses: under 15–20%, excluding references
  • Journal submissions: under 10%, often under 5%
  • Lab and technical reports: higher is normal because of standard method language

Why the raw number misleads

Reference lists, cover pages, standard headings and long block quotes all inflate the percentage without indicating misconduct. Most Turnitin setups let the instructor exclude bibliography and quoted material — the filtered figure is the one that matters.

The single-source rule of thumb

Markers care more about the largest single match than the total. Twenty-five percent spread across forty properly cited sources looks like thorough research. Twelve percent coming from one uncited website looks like copying.

Self-plagiarism

If you submitted an earlier draft into a repository-storing folder, your final version can match itself at 80–100%. This is the most common cause of panic-inducing scores, and it is why every check we run is non-repository.

How to lower it properly

Cite everything you paraphrase, shorten block quotes, put method descriptions in your own words, and rewrite rather than synonym-swap. Then re-run the check to confirm the number moved for the right reason.

FAQ

Is 20% similarity too high?

Not necessarily. If the matches are cited quotations and references, 20% can be perfectly acceptable. Look at the source breakdown, not the total.

Does Turnitin count the reference list?

Only if the instructor has not enabled the bibliography exclusion filter. Many do.
