Does Turnitin Check for AI? What It Detects and What It Doesn't
Yes — since April 2023 Turnitin runs an AI writing indicator on every submission, separate from the similarity score. It is not the same check, it is not shown to every instructor, and it does not work the way most students assume. Here is the honest breakdown.
The AI score is a separate number from similarity
Similarity measures matched text against sources. The AI indicator estimates what share of the submitted prose reads as machine-generated. A paper can show 3% similarity and 90% AI, or 40% similarity and 0% AI. They are independent signals and instructors read them separately.
What Turnitin's AI detector actually looks at
It scores sentence-level predictability. Large language models pick statistically likely next words, which produces unusually even sentence length, low burstiness, and predictable transitions. Turnitin segments your document, scores each segment, and reports the percentage of segments it believes were machine-written.
- Long-form English prose is scored
- Bullet lists, tables, code and citations are largely skipped
- Documents under roughly 300 words are usually not scored at all
How accurate is it?
Turnitin claims a low false-positive rate at the document level, but false positives are well documented in practice — especially for non-native English writers, heavily edited text, and formulaic academic prose. Treat the number as a signal that triggers a conversation, not as proof.
Can students see their own AI score?
Usually not. The AI indicator is visible in the instructor view of Turnitin Feedback Studio. Student self-check portals often hide it. That is why students order an instructor-side report before submitting — you see the same number your marker will see.
What to do if your AI score comes back high
Do not just spin the words with a paraphrasing tool; that raises similarity while barely moving the AI score. Rewrite the flagged sections in your own sentence rhythm, add specific evidence, examples and citations, and vary sentence length. Then re-check to confirm the number actually moved.
FAQ
Does Turnitin check for ChatGPT specifically?
It does not identify a specific model. It scores how machine-like the writing pattern is, which catches ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini and most other generators.
Can I see my Turnitin AI score before I submit?
Not from a student account. FREKUM WRITES runs your file through an instructor account so you see the real AI percentage for $1 before you submit.
Does editing AI text lower the score?
Genuine rewriting does. Synonym swapping usually does not, and it can push similarity up.
